Hunger Games Viral Sends A Message From President Snow
In Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, President Coriolanus Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the movie) has a thing for roses. Due to a poison that he drank, Snow's mouth has sores in his mouth that will never heal, and to cover the scent of blood on his breath his wears a white, perfume-enhanced rose. Today I was sent one of President Coriolanus Snow's roses.
Obviously part of a viral campaign, I returned to my apartment this evening to find a large poster tube leaning against my door. Inside was a single white rose (real, by the way) with a note from the politician. You can see an image of the rose below, as well as a transcription of Snow's note.
From all of us here in the Capitol, I would like to wish you a happy Valentine's Day and a happy Hunger Games.
In addition to being a nice little tie-in to the movie, the gift is similar to an event in which Katniss finds a rose left in her room reading, "I can find you. I can reach you. Perhaps I am watching you now." (EDIT: Turns out that there was no note, but rather an implication about what the rose meant). This note feels a bit less ominous than that - he is wishing me a Happy Valentine's Day, after all - but I will probably be occasionally looking over my shoulder for the rest of the week.
The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Isabelle Fuhrman, Donald Sutherland, and Lenny Kravitz. Read more about the film in our Blend Film Database.
