Jack Black Planning A Bowling Movie With Richard Linklater
They aren’t exactly Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, but director Richard Linklater and his School of Rock star Jack Black have discovered a comfortable interplay over the years. They’re on the promotional circuit drumming up support for their recent collaboration, Bernie, but they’re also teasing a potential future project, and we have the details.
For years, Black has expressed interest in returning for a School of Rock sequel, and that remains a distinct possibility. But the actor and part-time musician told The L.A. Times recently that the duo is circling a bowling movie that might be based on the actual story of professional bowler and PBA champion Pete Weber. When asked that specifically, Black playfully hedges his bets, though he does confirm that Linklater’s story will follow a man who ditches everything in his life to suddenly try his hand at pro bowling.
The way Linklater works, don’t be surprised is he’s already shooting the movie, ready to drop it into theaters when we’re least expecting it. Take, for example, the third chapter in Linklater’s Before series, which Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy recently revealed is set in Greece and might actually bring closure to the wandering story. Linklater works fast. Even Black says that he appreciated the pace over that of a lumbering big-studio movie. “There’s not much trailer time on a movie like Bernie. We were shooting three pages a day.”
Whatever they did, it worked. Black is getting rave reviews for his performance in Linklater’s film, and the studio is trying to get him into the awards discussion. From there, it will be to the bowling lanes, but when and why is still a mystery. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.
