The adaptation of Judith Viorst's classic children's book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has had its fair share of ups and downs as its moved through the pre-production process, but finally seems to be ready to get on its feet. While the project was originally set up over at 20th Century Fox with The Kids Are Alright director Lisa Cholodenko attached to helm, both the studio and the filmmaker eventually left the project, with the movie heading over to Disney and finding Miguel Arteta to direct. But now that the film has found stable ground, it's starting to put more pieces together.

Jennifer Garner, who worked with Disney on last year's The Odd Life of Timothy Green, is now in talks to join Steve Carell in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; according to The Hollywood Reporter. Carell has actually been attached to the film since April of last year, and should Garner sign on they will team up to play the titular character's parents.

The book was adapted by Cholodenko and Rob Leiber, and tells the story of a young boy who wakes up one morning and immediately starts having the worst day of his life, from getting gum in his hair to discovering that there's no prize in his cereal box. The trade adds that there will be an added twist to the film version, as Alexander "wishes his family experienced his suffering, which they later do."

Garner will next appear with Matthew McConaughey in the drama Dallas Buyers Club and was recently cast in Ivan Reitman's football comedy Draft Day alongside Kevin Costner.
