After scoring his first Academy Award nomination with the Mark Zuckerberg biopic The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg took a break from drama with comedies like 30 Minutes or Less, Free Samples and To Rome With Love. But with his next funny feature Now You See Me poised to hit theaters this summer, Eisenberg is looking to dig back into drama with the atomic bomb-centered Midnight Sun.

Reporting from the European Film Market, Screen Daily reveals Eisenberg will front the film alongside Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild). Written and directed by actor turned filmmaker Chris Eigeman, its story is set in 1943 America. Fresh from graduate school, two young people (presumably Eisenberg and Hirsch) are recruited by the government for a top-secret project that will take them away from the jazz-soaked atmosphere of New York, and into the deserts of New Mexico. Kruger is expected to play one of the men's loyal wife, who is dragged along on their secretive scientific quest. Given the timeline and the setting, it's not a huge leap to assume they're working alongside Einstein on the Manhattan Project, though the real-life details might be changed for the sake of drama.

Though the project appears to be an original story, Richard Rhodes, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Making of the Atomic Bomb, will be an advisor on the film. Midnight Sun will mark Eigeman's second turn as a writer-director, following the 2007 Famke Janssen drama Turn the River, which went on to earn an Indie Spirit Award nomination.

Moving from a low-budget drama about a pool sharking single mom to a period piece that deals with the moral quandary of nuclear arms is a big leap, especially for a new filmmaker. But with a cast of such coveted and celebrated young stars, Eigeman has built himself a great foundation for compelling drama.

Midnight Sun is slated to shoot this summer.
