An official selection at this year’s Cannes film festival, Lynne Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin has been heavily acclaimed since it first showed in May. Based on the Orange Prize winning novel by Lionel Shriver, Kevin follows the story of a mother struggling to raise a troubled son who eventually goes on a killing spree at his high school.

The film is making a limited release to theaters on September 28th and in preparation a new trailer has hit the web. It takes you on a trip through the mother’s life, played by Tilda Swinton, from her romance with John C. Reilly’s Franklin, to the time when everything culminates in the grizzly murder or students. Check out the trailer below.

What you don’t get out of this trailer is that much of the story takes place after the murders and focuses on Tilda Swinton’s character trying to deal with what her son has done by writing letters to an estranged Reilly, now her ex-husband. Kevin is played by veteran high school weird-kid Ezra Miller, who got his start playing the troubled and lonely Robert in 2008’s indie thriller Afterschool.

This trailer is kind of slapdash. It feels like one of those fan made trailers where The Shining gets edited together as a comedy; or like if they took the trailers for two different movies and then just played them back to back. That’s not to say that We Need to Talk About Kevin doesn’t look incredibly interesting, because it does, but thus teaser only provides us with enough information to have us guessing whether it’s a horror movie or a romantic drama. Fortunately, the second half of the video nails down a heavy tone of dread that anyone look for a really serious drama will definitely flock to.
