Months ago, when we told you that Disney had struck a development deal with Johnny Depp and his production company, Infinitum Nihil, the two projects the actor wanted to pursue were a Paul Revere biopic and an update of the 1970s television series The Night Stalker. Well, the latter appears to be moving forward with Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim director Edgar Wright at the helm.

Deadline says Depp and Disney tapped Wright to “oversee and shape the project” with Depp and his producing partner, Christi Dembrowski, from the ground up. The TV show began as a movie-of-the-week, and followed Carl Kolchak, a crime reporter for a tabloid rag who frequently investigated such classic creatures of the night as werewolves, vampires and zombies.

The site says that Wright’s Night Stalker will fit the profile of family-friendly Disney franchises (much like Pirates of the Caribbean and the upcoming The Lone Ranger, also with Depp), and likely will aim for a PG-13 rating. I’m wondering how similar this story will be to Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, which also stars Depp and has him interacting with creatures of the night. But Wright tells a kinetic story, and Depp rarely repeats himself, so separating Shadows from Stalker shouldn’t be too difficult.

This also means Wright’s planned Any-Man feature, which always stalled in the rumor stage, goes back onto the back burner, which has repercussions in the Marvel universe of films. But they have their hands full with Avengers, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America sequels, so Ant-Man can wait for the benefit of Night Stalker.
