Joss Whedon, Shane Carruth, Richard Linklater And More Join SXSW 2013 Lineup
The South By Southwest Film Festival already tipped its hand to the fact that Steve Carell and Jim Carrey’s The Incredible Burt Wonderstone would launch its 2013 edition. This afternoon, organizers added 108 more films to the program.
SXSW celebrates its 20th anniversary with a full slate of narratives, documentaries, world premieres and film-specific panels that will help turn Austin into the center of the universe for film lovers. This year’s fest runs from March 8-16, beginning with Burt Wonderstone and continuing with screenings of already announced (and eagerly anticipated) features like the Evil Dead remake and Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers.
“Though trends emerge after the fact, not consciously while we’re programming, much of this year’s program embraces love and the need/search/desire for connection,” says Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson, who helped program 68 films from first-time filmmakers, 69 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and five U.S. premieres on the SXSW slate.
And they aren’t finished. The Midnighters feature section and the Short Film program will be announced on Feb. 6, with the complete panel lineup and schedule will follow on Feb. 13. Right off the bat, the movies that catch my eye are ones that created buzz at Sundance: Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight; Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color; and Dave Grohl’s music documentary Sound City. But SXSW is a place of discovery, so join me in combing the list on the next page for the various gems that await those who are able to make it to Austin in a few weeks.
