Justin Bieber Teaming Up With Ashton Kutcher For A Watered-down Comedy
I don’t mind Justin Bieber, at least not as a pop music phenomenon. What I do mind is the eagerness of people in other areas of the entertainment industry to take him seriously as an artist, not just as a music artist, but as someone who’s so multi-talented he must be involved in every single facet of our entertainment for the next twenty years. Isn’t he just a fad? Shouldn’t we just let him fade away like New Kids on the Block? Instead, he shows up everywhere. On CSI, on awards shows which have nothing to do with him or his very young demographic, and now he’s starring in a movie with Ashton Kutcher.
Word is that Bieber may land the lead role in a comedy called What Would Kenny Do?. If this pans out, he’d star opposite Ashton Kutcher in the story of the relationship between a 17-year-old and the thirtysomething version of himself. How does that work? Apparently there’s a hologram involved. A thirty-year-old hologram version of a 17-year-old kid appears and tries to help him through high school.
The movie is based on a script from (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, which landed on the blacklist as one of the best unproduced scripts of 2008. It’s also described as “rated-R” which doesn’t sound like Bieber’s bag at all. In fact, the script has already been rewritten by Neustadter and Weber to remove the raunchy and water it down to the family friendly Bieber/Kutcher level required.
Right now the LA Times says he’s still considering the project and that his touring schedule may prevent him from doing What Would Kenny Do?. That doesn’t matter. The fact that he’s interested in this shows a clear willingness on the part of this kid to start inserting himself into every facet of your entertainment life, whether you want him or not. If it’s not this movie, it’ll just be another one. If he’s going to do a feature it might as well be one with Ashton Kutcher.
