Annie Mumolo and Robert Smigel have helped create some of the funniest things you've ever seen, and yet you probably have no idea what they look like. That's because they're part of that genius, locked-in class of people called comedy writers, the ones who-- unlike Tina Fey, Conan O'Brien and the like-- haven't made the jump up to being known actors as well. Sure, both of them having acting credits-- Mumolo was the panicked woman on the plane in Bridesmaids, and Smigel is the voice of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog-- but you know their written work far better. Mumolo co-wrote the screenplay for Bridesmaids along with Kristen Wiig, and Smigel's got history with Saturday Night Live going way back, including the entire TV Funhouse oeuvre.

But Judd Apatow, that writer turned media mogul, is putting the two of them onscreen anyway. THR writes that he's cast both of them in acting roles in his untitled new film, currently shooting with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their roles from Knocked Up. Albert Brooks, another writer/actor with a lot more experience on the acting side, is also part of the cast, along with Melissa McCarthy, Megan Fox and Ryan Lee. Everyone's still being pretty secretive about the plot, though knowing Apatow that could be partly because they're still improvising and figuring out where things are headed. We at least know that Mumolo and Smigel will play a couple who are best friends with Rudd and Mann's characters, though I guess the kind of friends who weren't around when the events of Knocked Up took place.

With the disappointment of Funny People finally fading into the background, it's easy to remember just how much comedy Apatow has brought us as well, particularly in Knocked Up, which this new film will be compared to one way or another. It's an easy choice to look forward to next summer, even if just because of the guarantee that it will be better than the last summer movie Megan Fox starred in.
