You know Jorma Taccone as the guy who played Chaka in Land of the Lost. And you know MacGruber as the SNL sketch that is always surprisingly funny, mostly because it usually lasts under 2 minutes. And now, somehow, those two things are coming together for-- my God-- MacGruber the movie.
We already reported that the movie was happening, and that MacGruber himself Will Forte was writing the script with Taccone and John Solomon. But now Production Weekly is reporting that MacGruber starts filming in New Mexico next month, with Jorma Taccone at the helm. Taccone, to give credit where it's due, has directed all of the previous "MacGruber" sketches on SNL. But for a movie that will presumably be action-heavy, wouldn't you think they would have called in someone who actually has feature directing experience? Especially since it will involve a lot of expensive explosions? As part of the Lonely Island troupe that gave the world Andy Samberg and SNL's best digital shorts, Taccone was a first-hand witness to Hot Rod, the last movie that the Lonely Island guys were given free reign with. We all know how that turned out. I would love to see Taccone succeed, since he's clearly gifted at making the digital shorts and creating brilliance like "I'm On A Boat." But MacGruber is such an iffy concept for a movie to begin with, I feel like they need to call in all the outside help they can get. Check out a few "MacGruber" segments below and see if you can figure out how on earth that'll make a feature film. Back to top
