At the end of Machete, the Grindhouse follow-up from director Robert Rodriguez, the filmmaker made a pretty lofty promise. The credits sequence told audiences that they could expect two sequels to the film called Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. The reason I call it a lofty promise is because Grindhouse was fairly notorious for underperforming at the box office, as people didn't seem super excited to bring back the format. Then, as could have been predicted, Machete failed to do any real damage itself, pulling in only $26 million during its domestic run (albeit on a $10.5 million budget). While Rodriguez could have written off his credit sequence promise as a joke, he insisted that the sequels would get made and now he's actually a step closer to getting that done.

According to Deadline, Rodriguez has decided to team up with producer Alexander Rodnyansky to develop a sequel to the 2010 summer film. The plan is still to make a complete trilogy, and Rodnyansky will both be producing and financing the first sequel. Said the director about his movie, "The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance. Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time." They are currently aiming to start production in April and Danny Trejo is in talks to once again play the title character.

Kyle Ward is currently scripting the sequel, which will see Machete get hired by the U.S. government to take down the runner of a dangerous drug cartel in Mexico. The baddie plans on spreading "war across the planet with a weapon in space" and Machete and his team must team up to stop him. In addition to Trejo, it's expected that the cast members that didn't die in the first movie will return as well, such as Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Lindsey Lohan.
