Ever since Ben Affleck landed the Caped Crusader role in Zack Snyder' upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie one of the biggest questions that fans have been asking is in regards to what we can expect from the character's big redesign. There has been plenty of speculation in that arena, but as it turns out, Batman may not be the only superhero who is getting a new outfit. CineMovie.tv recently had the opportunity to sit down with costume designer Michael Wilkinson - who did all of the work on David O. Russell's American Hustle - and in the interview Wilkinson revealed that the Man of Steel's duds will be undergoing a bit of tweaking for the sequel.

The designer didn't go into any specifics about exactly what is being changed for the new movie - instead just announcing that things will be different - but he did tell the site that they are nearing the end of all of their tests and that they are just about ready for the start of production. Said Wilkinson, "We are now in the stage where we’re refining our designs with the last series of camera tests and doing our final tweaks in preparation for shooting."

As much as I want to hope that all changes being made to the Superman suit are because of practical evolution, the reality is that the move is more about marketing. It's hard to sell a Superman toy from Batman vs. Superman if it looks exactly like the toy from Man of Steel, so you make a few alterations to the design of the outfit and voila, the action figures start flying off the shelf. Similar reasoning exists in changing the Batman armor as well. Yes, the new franchise wants to differentiate itself from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, but they also want to be able to launch a whole new line of Halloween costumes.

Hollywood pessimism aside, I do find myself wondering what kind of changes Snyder and Wilkinson will be making. The suit in Man of Steel was largely based on the design featured in DC Comics' New 52 line of comics, which most notably got rid of the character's red "underwear" - is there any chance that could make a return? Or will it be something minor, like changing the texture of the fabric? We'll have to just wait and see.

With the film set to come out on July 17, 2015, production on the still untitled project is gearing up to start cameras rolling in the first half of next year. Unless Warner Bros. decides to give us an official glimpse at the costumes prior to the start of filmming, you can probably expect our first look at the new Superman and Batman suits will come from photographers that catch the actors shooting exterior scenes.
