Matthew McConaughey Pushes Dallas Buyers Club Into More Theaters Than Ever Before image
Matthew McConaughey appears to be the frontrunner in this yearís Best Actor race for his gut-wrenching performance in Dallas Buyers Club. His co-star, Jared Leto, has been picking up key wins at leading awards shows, pointing to a possible Oscar win. And yet, the outstanding movie these men support has only earned $20.3 millionÖ or half of what Ride Along pulled in over its debut weekend.

Somethingís wrong with that, and Focus Features is attempting to correct it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jean-Marc Valleeís Oscar-nominated Dallas Buyers Club has expanded to 1,100 theaters nationwide, which is "up from a previous high of 734 back in December."

In the film, McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a hard-drinking, drug-taking sex fiend whose party lifestyle is cut short when heís diagnosed with HIV. The manís initial mission is to acquire AZT, an experimental drug back in the 1980s (when the story takes place). Eventually, Woodroof becomes a crusader for more effective drugs that actually treat AIDS patients but that, for whatever reason, arenít approved by the FDA in our marketplace.

Hereís the trailer:

I gushed over Dallas Buyers back when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, writing at the time:
McConaughey officially leaps into this yearís Oscar pool with both feet, and the significant "splash" he generates should ensure that other aspects of Valleeís stirring production get "wet" in the process.

Not to pat myself on the back or anything, but thatís kind of what happened. Dallas Buyers earned six Oscar nominations this season, including the "Big Dog" that is Best Picture. In addition to Actor and Supporting Actor, it nabbed Original Screenplay, Editing and Makeup. And as I mentioned, McConaughey and Leto have been champs on the awards circuit, delivering gracious, passionate and memorable speeches at major Oscar precursor awards.

What are you waiting for? Honestly? Go see Dallas Buyers Club, and see what all the (Oscar) fuss is about.
