It’s a sad day for movie fans. Miramax is officially dead. The Disney owned indie brand has been in trouble for some time now. Truthfully things haven’t been right since the company’s founders, Bob and Havey Weinstein, left the label in 2005 to start up The Weinstein Company free of Disney’s influence. It’s been a fast, downward slide since then. Today Disney turn’s out the company’s lights, putting 80 people out of work, and closing the door on an unforgettable era.

Miramax, more than any other studio, was the 90s. It’s founders, the Weinstein Brothers, loved and reviled, changed the face of cinema in that decade by discovering new indie talent and taking it from the underground into the mainstream. Miramax made independent film profitable, and now it’s not, and the company’s gone. But without Miramax would we have Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Kevin Smith, Alex Proyas, Robert Rodriguez, Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck? Maybe not. Miramax’s movies were more than profitable, they were influential. They changed the game for everyone, and for a brief point in time, they were the center of Hollywood’s universe.

Say goodbye by remembering the Miramax movies that moved you. Here’s just a few of my favorites:
