I understand why movie studios like to turn video games into movies. Modern gaming is actually quite cinematic, sometimes features great stories and has a lot of interesting characters (not to mention they are established brands, which is really what's most important to the executives). But notice how I said "modern" gaming. With some exception, games from the 80s and early 90s really weren't that big on plot - games like, say, Bally Midway's Rampage. But is that going to stop New Line Cinema from trying to make a movie out of it? Of course not!

THR reports that the Warner Bros. subsidiary is now aiming to turn the 1986 video game into a movie. The original game had three players - a giant ape (George) , a giant lizard (Lizzie), and a giant werewolf (Ralph) - that would go around cities destroying buildings and eating people. The game spawned four sequels, the most recent of which, Rampage: Total Descruction, came out in 2006. Producer John Rickard, whose previous titles include the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Horrible Bosses, Hall Pass and the upcoming Jack the Giant Killer, is backing the project. The trade doesn't mention if a writer or director has been attached yet, but it does say the plan is to "take advantage of the title and the visuals of the game."

What that last line means is that the movie's connection to the game will be the title and monsters destroying cities. Basically, they could be putting money towards an original script that involves monsters and epic destruction, but instead they are choosing to cash in on an old franchise that nobody cares about anymore.
