Natalie Dormer has never been a woman who has trouble going for it. She’s done nudity, corsets and all sorts of general weirdness; so, it probably shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that she’s willing to cut her hair for a role. In this case, she was apparently willing to shave her head, or at least half of it for both parts of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.
The above photo of the former Tudors star was taken on Saturday night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She later told Entertainment Weekly she actually buzzed it down all the way back in October but hasn’t stepped out in public in the months since. Fortunately, no regret has built up.
"Francis Lawrence, the director of Mockingjay, and I discussed it and I took the job on the premise that I would possibly [have to] shave my whole head. I’m actually really pleased that we went halfway because I think it’s more the Capitol… and that’s where Cressida comes from. She comes from the Capitol, so she’s got a stylized thing going on and now she’s turned rebel. I think it’s right for the character."
This particular look is actually right in the Capitol’s wheelhouse. The girls there tend to be very off the top and showy, but there’s still a very fashionable component to their choices. They’re not just be edgy for edgy’s sake. They legitimately think they look good; so, it’s reasonable to assume a girl, and more specifically Cressida, would shave half of her head.
Given she’s at least a recurring character on Elementary and Game Of Thrones, her appearance is extremely important. Fortunately, she reportedly rocks a wig for those roles and producers didn’t mind the alteration given it won’t be difficult to hide and won’t show up on screen.
Once upon a time, a woman shaving half of her head would have been considered borderline crazy. There just weren’t a ton of examples of that sorta thing, at least not beyond the Bow Wow Wow chick, but over the past few years, the half head shave has actually become pretty trendy. Look no further than Pink, Amanda Bynes and Rihanna for that. They’ve all rocked the style for at least a few months, and in many ways, they’ve helped to normalize it.
Here’s to hoping Dormer looks badass in Mockingjay.
