There are many out there - particularly Joss Whedon fans - who view Nathan Fillion as a god. Now he's finally getting a chance to portray one on the big screen.

The actor, who is best known for playing Mal Reynolds on the short-lived series Firefly and Richard Castle on the on-going Castle, has landed a gig playing Hermes in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, according to THR. Based on the book by Rick Riordan, the story follows Percy as he and his friends head to the titular Sea of Monsters to find the legendary Golden Fleece. The film features Hermes, who is the messenger god in Greek mythology, as the father of Luke (Jake Abel), the film's antagonist. Fillion will actually be replacing Dylan Neal, who portrayed the character in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The cast also includes the returning Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson. Thor Freudenthal, best known for directing Diary of a Wimpy Kid, is helming the feature, which is currently slated with a March 26, 2013 release date.

While Fillion has always been a big name on TV - Firefly and Castle are only two of the shows he's been on - the sad truth is that he doesn't do a lot of movies. The last time we saw him was in James Gunn's Super, and that role was basically a glorified cameo. Beyond that you have to 2008 to find his last film role. Obviously he has commitments to Castle that he has to keep, but it would be nice if he were to use his hiatuses to do some more work in features.
