Disney has high expectations for Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful. The film came together right after the billion dollar success named Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and it's been reported that the movie has a budget of $200 million. But even though the movie isn't even in theaters yet, the studio is planning the future of the franchise.

Variety is reporting that Disney has already hired screenwriter Mitchell Kapner to start working on a direct sequel to Sam Raimi's new film. Kapner was one of the original writers on the new movie, sharing a writing credit with David Lindsay-Abaire, and was actually tapped by the studio a few months to start working on a follow-up. The screenwriter's previous credits include The Whole Nine Yards, the story of Romeo Must Die, and the direct-to-video Into the Blue 2: The Reef.

As of now there are no plot details available, but the trade notes that the story has to work from the original L. Frank Baum novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and not the Victor Fleming-directed The Wizard of Oz. This is because the book is in public domain but the movie is still owned by MGM.

The report doesn't say anything about Raimi potentially coming back as a director? There are only a few directors that have actually managed to complete a Hollywood trilogy, and Raimi has already done it twice with Evil Dead and Spider-Man. Could he go for the hat trick? Would you want him to? Or would you rather see him branch off in another direction and try something else, like Drag Me To Hell? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
