Pain & Gain Clip Is The Beginning Of A Dumb Heist Gone Wrong
When you see tires squealing and muscled dudes jumping out of cars in a Michael Bay movie, you usually expect it to be followed by some giant robots, or aliens, or some combination of the two. But in Pain & Gain Bay is taking his familiar aesthetic of chaotic action cinema and bringing it into something he's usually been straight-up awful at: comedy.
And apparently we're a long way from the robot testicles of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, because this clip from Pain & Gain is… actually funny. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie play a trio of meatheads who decide to get rich by kidnapping a local real estate magnate (played by Tony Shalhoub), and this clip seems to find them at the beginning of their scheme, attempting to back up their van against the millionaire's BMW. Of course, when you've spent way more time exercising your arms than your brain, you're probably not going to pull that off on the first try.
We've been optimistic about Pain & Gain since the first trailer showed more humor and self-awareness than we're used to seeing from Bay. Of course, given that the film also includes supermodels and a ton of guns, we're not too far from Bay's wheelhouse either. This clip, which premiered at MTV, is just one of the many premiering at the website this week in advance of this Sunday's MTV Movie Awards-- but probably the only one that will have a grown man in a bright green alien costume, so there's that.
