When The Way Back is released next month, it will officially mark the return of Australian filmmaker Peter Weir. Absent on the film scene for the last seven years, the director hasn't made a movie since 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Though not the financial smash that the studio was hoping for, the film did earn eight Academy Award nominations, two wins and a legion of fans. Earlier this month, the film's star, Russell Crowe, took to his Twitter account and told fans that if they wanted a sequel, they should contact 20th Century Fox, and the response was massive. But would Weir want to come back for another film?

Apparently not. Digital Spy recently spoke with Weir and the subject of Master and Commander came up. When asked if he would have any interest in making a sequel, the filmmakers response was to say that it would be unlikely, saying,
"I tend to like to do one film of a type and then move to something else. That was a fascinating experience, but do I need to do it twice? I don't think so."

It always warms the cockles of my heart to see a director going after projects that stimulate him mentally rather than making movies for the paycheck. At the same time, I can't imagine that the fans will be too happy to hear that the filmmaker at the head of the first film doesn't want to make a second one. At the very least, let's just hope that Weir doesn't go another seven years without making another movie, Master and Commander or not.
