Right after Tom Hardy and Chris Pine go to war for her affections in the aptly titled This Means War, the beautiful Reese Witherspoon will display her talents on a different canvas in the independent film Big Eyes.

The Hollywood Reporter says Witherspoon will play Margaret Keane, an artist whose pop-eyed paintings became all the rage in the 1960s. Also known as “Waifs,” “Keane” and “Sad Eye” paintings, these works of art popped up around San Francisco nearly 50 years ago and became household commodities … until controversy cropped up.

You see, Margaret’s husband, Walter (Ryan Reynolds), tried to take credit for his wife’s designs. They even went to court, though when the judge asked Walter to paint a original “Big Eyes” painting in front of him, the liar claimed to have a sore shoulder.

Tim Burton is set to produce Big Eyes, with Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski on board to direct. The duo worked with Burton on Ed Wood, and also helmed two modern classics in Man on the Moon -- which retold Andy Kaufman’s strange story – and The People vs. Larry Flynt.

That’s a great directing team, and they’ve been handed an outstanding cast. In addition to Witherspoon’s upcoming War, we’ll be able to see Reynolds in Safe House alongside Denzel Washington. And as we all know, the last time Witherspoon tried her hand at an eclectic biography, she ended up collecting her first Oscar trophy for her portrayal of the spitfire, June Carter Cash. Let’s hope Big Eyes captures similar lightning in a bottle.
