The minute we learned that David Cronenberg was working on a movie about Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung it was an immediate must-see; casting Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley in the lead roles made it even more intriguing, and the two home runs Fassbender has hit in his two movies released this year (Jane Eyre and X-Men: First Class) means all eyes will most definitely be on him and the film. Now Sony Pictures Classics will be the lucky studio that makes sure we all get to see it. The studio announced today that they will be distributing A Dangerous Method in the United States; no release date is specified, but if Canadian Cronenberg doesn't manage to premiere the film at his native Toronto Film Festival, I'll sign up for Jungian psychotherapy myself.

Originally titled The Talking Cure and based on a play by Christopher Hampton of the same name, A Dangerous Method stars Fassbender as Carl Jung, a protege of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) who tests out a new method of therapy on a young Russian woman named Sabina (Knightley); given that she's Keira Knightley, it's not a huge surprise that both men fall in love with her. The play, at least, has some interesting parallels to X-Men: First Class, observing the close relationship between Jung and Freud and also its unraveling. Much as I liked X-Men: First Class, though, I have even higher expectations from A Dangerous Method, which is now in the hands of a specialty distributor that has always known how to handle movies as fascinating as this one seems. Hopefully I'll be reporting on it from the Toronto Film Festival come September.
