South Park Duo Trey Parker And Matt Stone Form Own Studio
How has it taken South Park wunderkinds Trey Parker and Matt Stone this long to branch out and establish their own production house?
Parker and Stone, who also are riding extremely high off of the success of their original Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, plan to launch the new company Important Studios, according to The New York Times. The paper says that the creative duo has raised enough money from interested investors, and that the new company’s estimated value already sits at $300M thanks to revenue raised by South Park, which currently is in its 16th season.
"Having worked with several different studios over the years, we came to realize that our favorite people in the world are ourselves,” Parker and Stone reportedly said in a release, which was being finalized for an announcement Monday morning.
Fans will cling to this obvious point raised by the Times: This could be the first major step toward bringing Book of Mormon to the big screen, as Parker and Stone will have both the clout and the capital to greenlight movie, television and theater projects … and Mormon should be the first important effort by Important Studios.
And while the quote from the release is meant as a punchline, it’s an ideal situation that Parker and Stone are maintaining control over their potential projects. They have proven over the years that they understand their brand of humor, they do not need it watered down by studio “suggestions,” and the sky could be the limit for Impossible Studios if the pair is able to do what they want in virtually any medium. Also, if Mormon is the massive hit many would expect it to be on the big screen, the studio could have a ton of credit on which to build. This is the beginning of a brand new day for Parker and Stone. Exciting times.
