Sparkle Will Shine Its Way On To Blu-ray In November
With Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, and CeeLo Green on board, Sparkle definitely features the acting prowess to have made a critical impression, but before the film's release, I worried it would be all glitter and no substance. Luckily, the opposite holds true, and if you missed the musical drama during its initial theatrical run, you won’t have long to wait to catch the film from the comfort of your own home. Sparkle debuts on Blu-ray and DVD on November 30.
I can’t get enough of Mike Epps, so I’m not surprised I enjoyed his performance as the darkly unhappy comedian Satin Struthers in the flick. I am more surprised by how invested I was in the mother-daughter and sister-sister relationships in the film. There are a lot of dark themes in the story, but the film offers plenty of comforting moments, as well.
The flick is probably best known for being Houston’s last big screen appearance before her untimely death, and it’s good to see the singer’s portrayal of Emma was a role worth leaving behind. Because Sparkle has such a close connection to Houston, a lot of the extras in the set are meant to be tributes or discussions about the powerhouse performer. Notably, one of the bonus features is a music video for “Celebrate,” the final song Houston recorded with Sparks before her death. Even without the singing-based stuff, the Blu-ray set, especially, will come with a glut of extras that should please even the mildest of fans. You can check out the full list, below.
