Sugar Ray Robinson, The Greatest Boxer Of All Time, To Get A Biopic
Much like the city of Boston, the sport of boxing has an incredible track record in the movie world. While there are countless bad movies about baseball, basketball and football, boxing sports some fantastic titles like Raging Bull, Rocky, Million Dollar Baby, and Ali, just to name a few. Now another one with great potential is going into production.
Deadline reports that producer Rachael Horovitz and screenwriter Danny Strong have option the rights to make a biopic about Sugar Ray Robinson, a boxer largely regarded as one of the greatest of all time. The film will be based on the biography Sweet Thunder: The Life and Times of Sugar Ray Robinson by Wil Haygood, who will also write the script.
Robinson's story is actually pretty amazing and should make for a great film. Over his career, which included 200 fights, he won 173, including bouts against greats like Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio and Rocky Graziano. But while his fights will certainly be part of the story, what makes Robinson an interesting figure is how he battled against the mafia, who control of the sport in the 1940s and 1950s. It will undoubtedly be a very high profile role and attract a lot of attention from actors, but who would you want to see play Sugar Ray? Sound off in the comments section.
