Surprise! Edgar Wright Directed Part Of Star Trek Into Darkness image
So here's a tidbit about Star Trek Into Darkness you never though you'd learn. That photo above, tweeted today by Edgar Wright, came along with a fascinating and brief story about what happens when you're a director and your friend is playing Scotty in the new Star Trek movie:

That set behind Wright might look familiar-- it's featured prominently in the background of publicity shots like this one and this one, and it's not revealing too much to say this is the location where Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) arrive in an attempt to take down John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), the man who has just set off a bomb at Starfleet Headquarters in London. Funnily enough, Simon Pegg-- Wright's longtime collaborator and friend who plays Montgomery Scott-- isn't even in the scene, which means that Wright was welcome on set not just as a tagalong to his buddy.

Having seen Star Trek Into Darkness, I admit-- I have no idea which of those shots was Wright's. But it's a fun detail to try and suss out when you go see the film, which is already open in many places overseas and finally comes to theaters here next week. I liked it a lot. Though it might have trouble living up to what Wright actually has coming out this summer, The World's End, which debuted an amazing first trailer earlier this week. Simon Pegg gets to be both Scotty and the leader of the pub crawl in The World's End, and Edgar Wright gets to say he technically directed both Star Trek Into Darkness and his own movie. Everybody wins!
