As the 2012 South By Southwest Film Festival rolls on, Moviehole columnist Adam Frazier and I are starting to dig into the second tier films – the ones that come into this year’s festival looking for the level of buzz that’s already attached to The Raid, 21 Jump Street or The Cabin in the Woods.

Adam went with The Do-Deca Pentathalon, an effort by Jay and Mark Duplass actually directed before their recent, more mainstream films Cyrus and Jeff Who Lives At Home, that shows the brothers developing their comedic voice as they explore the concept of sibling rivalry. Though I also enjoyed Do-Deca, I singled out Matthew Lillard’s directorial debut Fat Kid Rules the World, a coming-of-age comedy that’s bursting with hope and heart. Hear what we had to say about both films by clicking on our latest video blog, shot from the floor of the Austin Convention Center.

Titles likes these – as well as Safety Not Guaranteed, Brooklyn Castle, Eden and Sleepwalk With Me -- need vocal support. Some still need distribution. Others will be coming to theaters with limited marketing budgets. Word-of-mouth can only help. So when these movies come to your town, give them a shot. You will not be disappointed.

SXSW coverage rolls on, so keep checking CinemaBlend for the latest updates from Austin.
