With generally negative reviews that still seemed a little astonished that it wasn't more awful, Texas Chainsaw 3D seems a slight cut above the usual dreck that comes out in the first week of January-- and the box office is rewarding it in turn. Early Friday box office estimates say Texas Chainsaw will rank above all the huge holiday holdovers this weekend, making $10.2 million yesterday and predicted for a $21 to $25 million weekend after all.

Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, which opened in second place behind The Hobbit the weekend after Christmas, is hanging on to its second place spot, with Les Miserables and The Hobbit fighting it out for third, according to The Hollywood Reporter. All are expected to have strong weekends that add to their already-massive grosses, so there are really no losers involved, even though it might sting for prestige fare like Les Mis to fall behind a sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

If you feel like getting truly depressed about the box office, there are a few places to look, like the Billy Crystal-led "comedy" Parental Guidance making $3.1 million on Friday, giving it $45 million total. Then there's the struggles of Matt Damon's Promised Land, which expanded into more theaters this weekend but could only manage $1.3 million-- not much for a movie with that kind of star power. Promised Land is suffering badly from the crowded holiday release window, which is a real shame, since it's a nicely drawn fable about American identity that's just a little too small and unassuming to catch on when there are Djangos and Hobbits-- and now Chainsaws-- to grab everyone's attention.
