Toby Kebbell Is The Latest Actor Looking Toward Brit Marling's The East![]()
Toby Kebbell has been working steadily since 2000, but he first turned my head in Guy Ritchie’s 2008 crime comedy RocknRolla, where he devoured scenery as a drug-abusing spoiled rocker. He tried his hand at a few bigger-budget fantasy epics after that in Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the recently wrapped Clash of the Titans 2. But it appears he’s swinging back around to choosing interesting character work, from a part in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse to a potential part in Zal Batmanglij’s The East.
Currently, Kebbell is “negotiating” to fill a vital role in the production, which centers on an undercover agent (Brit Marling) infiltrating a terrorist organization to protect a privately held corporation. The Hollywood Reporter says Kebbell would play a doctor who “was treated with a tainted drug that caused him to have Parkinson’s-like symptoms.” Kebbell’s gifted enough that he likely wouldn’t make the disease showy, and I’m honestly interested to see how he’ll fit into Batmanglij’s still-developing picture. Recently, we reported that Juno and Inception star Ellen Page was contemplating joining The East as a member of the eco-terrorist group who establishes a rivalry with Marling’s undercover agent. So Batmanglij is making great decisions in the casting department, raising our interest level in The East with each new update. We’d be interested in the project, regardless, based on the tense work he and Marling achieved in the Sundance fave Sound of My Voice, which Fox Searchlight will distribute. We’re not sure yet when The East would reach theaters, but with this cast in place, it’s shaping up to be a must-see. |
