Tracy Morgan, Eddie Griffin Battling To Play Ol' Dirty Bastard On Screen![]()
Tracy Morgan knows: the best way to get the “O” in EGOT is to play a dead artist in a silver screen biopic, which explains why the 30 Rock star is angling to play former Wu Tang Clan member Ol’ Dirty Bastard in an upcoming film.
ODB’s cousin, RZA, tells XXL Mag that Morgan’s competing with fellow comic and actor Eddie Griffin for the chance to play the late rapper. “Me and Eddie talked about it, laughed about it. Tracy Morgan, he wanna do it [too],” RZA explained. “I said ‘Ya’ll both kinda can do it.’” Is he hinting at some kind of multiple-personality, Charlie Kaufman-type approach to ODB’s life? Probably not, as RZA says right now, Griffin has the edge in the competition because he “spent time with Dirty” and they “knew each other well.” ODB was 35 when he overdosed in 2004. One of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, he toured the world but also had plenty of run-ins with the law. It’s unclear how much of Bastard’s life will be featured in the biopic, though with a screenplay by Dirty’s cousin, Raeshawn, it’s sure to have personal and potentially sordid details. “He’s been working on it for two years now,” RZA told the magazine. “[In fact] I think Eddie’s already signed on with a letter of intent. I signed on, of course. So you know [Raeshawn] got my blessin’ to make it happen.” So if you had to choose, which actor would you like to see play ODB in a biopic? Both Griffin and Morgan are known for comedy. Can they transition to drama? Would you prefer to see someone else? Let us know by posting in the comments section below. |
