It was an 80s remake celebration at theaters this weekend with not one, but two blasts from the past debuting on the big screen. Both The A-Team and The Karate Kid opened wide across the country, but only one plan came together while the other waxed off.

The Karate Kid, which apparently took advantage of China's ridiculously undervalued exchange rate with the American dollar by filming almost entirely on location, managed to roll in with a meager budget of only $40 million. The $56 million it banked this weekend for a solid number one opening means everything it earns from here on out is icing on distributor Sony Picture's financial cake. Ignore any sequel speculation! with this kind of response a second film is nothing short of guaranteed.

While the martial arts remake kicked butt this weekend, The A-Team struggled to set off any explosions with audiences. At a very distant second place it took in only $26 million against its $110 million budget. International sales added only $15 million to the pile, leaving the movie's profitability factor in an even worse place than Mr. T's career.

Iron Man 2 fell just thousands short of breaking the $300 million mark in domestic sales as it inches closer to the year's current number one money maker Alice In Wonderland (currenly sitting at $333 million and slowing fast).

Meanwhile, everyone is holding their breath for next weekend's cowboy showdown. On one side Woody and the gang from Toy Story 3 will go for the Pixar fans and family-friendly audiences while those preferring gratuitous violence and Megan Fox in a corset will be lining up for Josh Brolin's Jonah Hex. Studios will be hoping for a solid cash crop from both, perhaps boosting what is turning out to be another sleepy summer at the box office.
