Weekend Box Office: Monsters University Is Top Of The Class Over World War Z image
Pixar appeared to have yet another hit on its hands Thursday when early previews had some forecasters predicting opening totals between $65 million and $70 million for Monsters University. The sequel to Monsters Inc. actually came in at number one with $82 million, handing the studio its second highest opening weekend behind Toy Story 3's $110 million debut three years ago.

While that's good news for the movie's bottom line, when Box Office Mojo adjusts for ticket price inflation it's only the sixth highest opening for a Pixar studio. That means fewer people on average shelled out to see the movie than did the original Monsters Inc which banked $87 million when its 2001 ticket prices are adjusted to 2013.

Brad Pitt's World War Z came in second place this weekend with $66 million, a respectable total and a solid start for a movie that has a hefty $200 million budget to overcome, a number that grew over the course of the last year when the studio decided to recraft and reshoot the movie's ending.

Man of Steel added $41 million, pushing its total past the $200 million mark and making it the fifth movie to pass that line. The movie is on track to overcome most of the rest of its competition to settle in as the second highest grossing domestic film this year behind Iron Man 3's $400+ million gross.
