It's been a big week for Hollywood's various production guilds to announce their nominees for the best films of the year, with the The Producers Guild and The Art Directors Guild already chiming in, and now The Writers Guild has joined the fray. With a number of major awards contenders ineligible thanks to various arcane WGA rules, their lineup made room for some excellent surprises, while also boosting the already Oscar-friendly films that made the cut. Here's the list:
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY The Descendants The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo The Help Hugo Moneyball BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Bridesmaids 50/50 Midnight in Paris Win Win Young Adult BEST DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY Better This World If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front Nostalgia for the Light Pina Position Among the Stars Senna If you're curious about the Documentary Screenplay category, that's not one included at the Oscars-- though given how many strong documentaries came out this year, maybe it should be. As for the other two categories, as usual, the Original Screenplay lineup is especially wide-ranging and interesting, with every film on the list qualifying as some kind of comedy despite being hugely different from each other. The category is also missing several ineligible powerhouse films, including The Artist-- which is practically a shoo-in for a nomination-- along with strong indies like Beginners and Margin Call. As for the Adapted Category, it's missing potential contenders like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Drive, but War Horse was plenty eligible and didn't make it, which might be telling for the Steven Spielberg epic long expected to be a huge Best Picture contender. And it's interesting to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, so recently written off as being too dark for awards potential, included in there right alongside the cuddly The Help. Are its chances better than we thought? A new Oscar Eye column is coming out later today to sort through all of this and predict where the race might go from here, so stay tuned for much more analysis. Back to top
