The film, based on a novel from Thomas Pynchon, follows pot-smoking L.A. private detective Doc Sportello (Phoenix), who is investigating the kidnapping of one of his ex-girlfriends. As you might expect, the actual cops aren’t too keen on Sportello butting into their business, but that doesn’t stop him from winding his way through a world of weirdoes in order to get the case solved.
