In the movie, Rockwell plays a man named Douglas Varney, a small town pharmacist living an ordinary life with his beautiful wife Kara (Monaghan). Things quickly go from normal to insane, though, when Douglas begins a prescription drug and alcohol fueled affair with one of his regular customers (Wilde).
Adding Liotta only amps the acting muscle in this impressive cast as Moore and Posamentier, directing from their own script, have already lured Sam Rockwell, Michelle Monaghan and Dame Judi Dench for pivotal roles. The story focuses on a humdrum pharmacist (Rockwell) who enters into a sordid affair with a trophy-wife regular customer (Wilde), sending both of their lives into a debilitating spiral. Better Living reportedly will begin filming in May in hopes of hitting a 2013 release date.
Geoff Moore and David Posamentier's Better Living Through Chemistry has had a bit of trouble holding on to its stars. When the project was first announced last September it had both Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Garner attached to star. After adding both Michelle Monaghan and Judi Dench, however, Renner was forced to drop out, leaving Sam Rockwell to replace him.
Rockwell is negotiating to join Geoff Moore and David Posamentier’s Better Living Through Chemistry, Variety reports. He would replace a previously cast Jeremy Renner in the role of a meek, unhappy, small-town pharmacist who enters an illicit affair with a trophy wife (Garner) and begins to plot to murder her husband.
I've always wanted to see a proper adaptation of James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice, but neither versions - including the 1946 film with John Garfield and Lana Turner and the 1981 film with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange - have ever been willing to go far enough to capture the story's more graphic content.
