Devil Wears Prada Shows Its Wares

Fox has gone a really interesting direction with the latest trailer for their upcoming film, The Devil Wears Prada. The thing about it, is that it isn't really a trailer at all. Sure, they're calling it a trailer, and it ends with the usual closing trailer title card. But what they've really done is simply snip a three minute scene right out of the movie and put it out there for everyone to see. The strangest thing about it is that as a marketing device it really works.

My interest level in Prada was almost zero before seeing this. The film's first trailer was the usual bit of slickly cut together marketing, easily ignored. But this one scene gives audiences a much better feel for the flavor of the movie, and the flavor is actually pretty damned good. The dialogue is fast paced and has a good rhythm to it. Anne Hathaway, who I've always said has something, is good. The problem is that so far her foray into non-kiddie movies has resulting in nothing more than the displaying of her fabulous chest. Even her role in Brokeback Mountain boiled down to little more than that. I'm delighted that she's chosen to repeatedly free herself of the restraints of clothing, but maybe now she can show some talent for something else as well.
