When you come to Star Wars Celebration, you hope for something special. Something unique. Something exclusive. You don't expect it, because then you'd be disappointed if it didn't happen. Well, the Star Wars fans who flocked to London to attend the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on Friday didn't leave disappointed, because they got to see Darth Vader.
By now, you have seen the sizzle reel, a montage of behind the scenes footage that hopefully got you very excited for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, due in theaters in December. But after showing us the reel, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy promised something different. Something more. A new trailer, with Darth Vader in it.
Lord Vader shows up at the very end of this Rogue One new trailer. The new montage plays a lot with the footage that we have previously seen in other Rogue One presentations. Jyn Erso, Felicity Jones' upstart Rebel leader, tells the band of heroes that she has assembled that "This is our chance to make a real difference." And then the camera pans across a dark table. Silver, almost. And in a red light, we see a reflection. And then we hear the heavy breathing.
To be honest, I was hoping that we would get a clearer image of Darth Vader. Possibly even a sequence of Vader in action. This was the briefest of brief teases, and it made us very hungry for more. That likely was the point. We know that Darth Vader will be operating in the background of Rogue One, because it takes place at the same time as Star Wars: A New Hope. But the main villain in this movie will be Director Orson Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn.
But as part of the Rogue One Star Wars panel, Gareth Edwards did get into greater detail about the process of recording James Earl Jones' voice for Vader -- a must, for die-hard Star Wars fans. Though, because we got a very brief glimpse of the classic Star Wars villain, and this is the second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I'm wondering if that means he isn't in it as much as we would hope? Do they need him? Is it time to find new Star Wars villains to celebrate, like Snoke and Kylo Ren? Or are you hoping for a full-on Vader assault? Let us know in the comments section below.
