Wonder Woman Just Revealed Who Is Playing Artemis, And We Are Psyched

Ann Wolfe Boxing

The importance of Patty Jenkins' upcoming Wonder Woman solo movie cannot be understated. Not only is the film going to allow Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) to take center stage in a film for the very first time, but it will also serve as a proper introduction to a broad range of Wonder Woman supporting characters. The Amazonian women of Themyscira will indeed receive proper representation when this movie finally debuts, and now we've learned that boxing champion Ann Wolfe will portray Artemis in the film. Patty Jenkins posted the above tweet earlier this week to announce that female boxing champion Ann Wolfe has taken on the role of Artemis in Wonder Woman. Not to be confused with the Green Arrow character of the same name, Artemis is a mighty Amazonian warrior who (like Diana) hails from Themyscira. She has regularly teamed up with Wonder Woman in the comics, and she is also a member of Red Hood's Outlaws team in the DC Rebirth run -- which possibly sets her up for a silver screen team up with Jason Todd at some point in the future of the DCEU.

You would be hard-pressed to find a better athlete for the role of Artemis than Ann Wolfe. A professional boxer by trade, the 46-year-old has held world titles in three categories at the same time, and many have hailed her as one of the best female boxers in history. In a movie that primarily centers itself on the theme of female strength, this is a near-perfect choice.

Bringing in a high-profile champion from a combat sport to portray a highly physical comic book character is nothing new in the realm of superhero movies -- particularly when it comes to female characters. Former MMA champion Gina Carano famously played Angel Dust in Tim Miller's Deadpool, and Ronda Rousey's name was consistently thrown around to potentially take on the role of Captain Marvel before Brie Larson was ultimately cast in the upcoming Marvel project.

There's something to be said about enlisting actresses who know how to throw a punch and take a hit, and the inclusion of Ann Wolfe in Wonder Woman means that Artemis will inevitably become one of the most badass characters in the entire film. We already know that she's going to spar with Diana while training her, so let's hope we get to see them kick ass side by side as well.

As always, CinemaBlend will bring you more information related to Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman as new details become available to us. The film will hit theaters on June 2, 2017.
