One Guardians Character Who Could Have A Bigger Role In Guardians 3

Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already playing in various international locations and is only two days away from opening in the U.S., but attention is already being turned to the future of the space-faring superhero team. And no, I'm not talking about their appearance in next year's Avengers: Infinity War. Last month, it was announced that James Gunn will return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he has already started working on. It will be a long time until we learn specific details concerning the threequel, but apparently Gunn is already formulating how to give Gamora a bigger role.

Along with talking to Chris Pratt about what he's cooking up for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn told USA Today that he's had "some pretty intense conversations" with Zoe Saldana about Gamora having a "significant" role in the movie. No elaboration was provided on what this will entail, and with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 following after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, who knows what Gamora will be like? However, when our own Eric Eisenberg spoke with Saldana about Gamora's role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the actress expressed interest in exploring how Gamora's dark past affects her in a third movie. She stated:

What came of [her upbringing under Thanos] was this warrior that is surviving, that will do whatever she can to get away from that -- even if she has to die. But she's also on this road to redemption. There's a great deal of baggage that she's carrying in this movie that prevents her from being as light and as funny and open as the rest of the Guardians. And I hope that [when] we go into a Vol. 3 we'll explore that more.

Like Nebula, Gamora was taken by Thanos at a young age and raised to be one of the galaxy's deadliest assassins. It was only when she learned about her "dad's" deal with Ronan to help him destroy Xandar in exchange for the Power Orb that she turned her back on the Mad Titan, and upon befriending the other Guardians, she's now using her talents for good. Nevertheless, one doesn't simply get over the kind of things that Gamora went through under Thanos' upbringing, so even though she's on a better life path, there are still some issues she needs to work through.

Of course, we're a long ways away to seeing what's in store for Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. First we have to see what happens to her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and after that, she and the other Guardians will need to help Earth's Mightiest Heroes battle Thanos and prevent him from obtaining unlimited power through the six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. And let's not forget her involvement in Avengers 4, which we know nothing about plot-wise.

The next chapter of Gamora's life will unfold when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is released this Friday.
