The Pitch Perfect 3 Trailer Is Hilarious and Surprisingly Explosive

The Mummy may not have worked out so well, but at least Universal still has Pitch Perfect 3 coming up, and it looks to be a pretty different time from the last two movies. In Pitch Perfect 2, the Barden Bellas graduated from college and prepared to make the jump into the workforce. As the new trailer for Pitch Perfect 3 shows us, that isn't working out too well for most of them. Universal has released the first footage of Pitch Perfect 3, which reassembles the talented cast and sends them on an adventure overseas. Check out all the new jokes in the hilarious and very surprisingly explosive trailer for Pitch Perfect 3.

The first footage from Pitch Perfect 3 finds the Bellas living life post-college and, as I noted prior, it isn't quite as fulfilling as singing acapella onstage together. You can't go wrong with opening your trailer with Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins, reprising their roles as the scene-stealing acapella commentators whose insults are as musical as any song. The duo is following around the Bellas, "an unlikely group of not-men who managed to win at something other than baking," in their personal lives. From quitting their jobs to sticking their arms up cow butts, the Bellas are pretty desperate to sing together again, which leads them to join a USO Tour overseas.

The Pitch Perfect films have never been heavy on plot, but the three-quel seems to indicate the studio may have been a little bit more daring with this one. In addition to all the jokes you'd expect, the first footage also showcases a surprising amount of action, from Fat Amy fighting a dude with a knife (though she's using sausage nunchucks) to leaping out of an exploding boat. They are going for the zany HARD in this one. It also feels like there's a bit more emphasis on physical humor this time around.

Of course, there's still plenty of what people like about these movie present: the songs and the intermingling banter between a talented cast. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, and Anna Camp return and this time they'll be going up against actual bands who play music. This time around Trish Sie is directing with a screenplay written by Kay Cannon.

Pitch Perfect 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 22, 2017, exactly one week after Star Wars: The Last Jedi (it's not very enviable release date).
