Would Charlize Theron Come Back For A Mad Max Prequel? Here's What She Says

Charlize Theron Mad Max Fury Road Furiosa

Despite the fact that superhero blockbusters have defined the last few summers, other franchises have still found ways to make their mark in the film industry as well. One of the most prominent recent examples of that phenomenon was George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, which featured a scene-stealing performance by Charlize Theron as the now iconic Furiosa. So what is the future of this fan-favorite character? Could we potentially see Theron return for a Furiosa-focused prequel? The Atomic Blonde actress recently addressed this possibility, and it sounds like she's onboard if George Miller ever decides to go back to her story. Theron said:

I'd love to. There were three scripts. They were written as back stories to Max's character and to Furiosa's character. But at the end of the day, this thing lives and breathes with [director] George [Miller]. I think Warner Bros. knows that. We are all waiting for him to show us the way.

Talk about a tease. If scripts for a Furiosa backstory exist, then the mythology is simply sitting there waiting to be told. Charlize Theron is willing to make that project a reality, but she will only do it on the condition that George Miller similarly returns to tell the story properly. Considering the fact that Mad Max: Fury Road was a critical and commercial success when it debuted back in 2015, Warner Bros. would be wise to pay attention and keep this idea on the burner until Miller is ready to join Theron on this one.

If nothing else, Charlize Theron's comments to Variety about a potential Mad Max prequel have our wheels spinning about the sort of insight that a new Furiosa film could offer us. George Miller never spoon fed us information during the events of Fury Road, which means that there are several unanswered questions from the last Mad Max movie that could easily receive more attention in a new project. How exactly did she lose her arm? What was her relationship with Immortan Joe like before Max showed up? The potential is seemingly limitless.

While there is currently no confirmation as to whether or not a Furiosa-centric prequel will ever actually materialize, it seems like it could represent the perfect step forward for Charlize Theron and her career as an action powerhouse. After all, over the course of the last few years, she has handily proven herself as one of the best female action stars currently working in Hollywood. Between Fury Road, The Fate of the Furious, and her upcoming stint in David Leitch's Atomic Blonde, Ms. Theron has managed to deliver stellar performances and bone-crunching action sequences consistently. To date, Furiosa still feels like her magnum opus, so we will keep our fingers firmly crossed that she will one day return to that delightfully badass role.
