In Star Wars mythology, there's an ancient Jedi prophecy that states that a mysterious figure will one day destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force. It was an idea introduced in the prequels and several characters believed that Anakin Skywalker was this foretold Chosen One. As far as George Lucas was concerned, Anakin was indeed the Chosen One... but Lucas isn't in charge anymore. The new powers of Star Wars are reopening the Chosen One case, as Mark Hamill essentially admitted in an interview, which means there is a new host of options for who could be the figure of legend in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In the interview, Mark Hamill stated that Luke made a "huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the Chosen One." The last fans heard, the Chosen One was already a done deal; Darth Vader technically destroyed the Sith by chucking Palpatine over a ledge. But I guess he didn't do a good enough job because the dark side lives on in Kylo Ren, Anakin's grandson. So, if the Chosen One hasn't really been revealed, then who is it? The concept seems to play a role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, though, we don't quite know yet to what extent. But if Luke Skywalker is still hunting for a Chosen One, then he might want to take a look at some of these characters for the job.
Luke Skywalker
Let's get one of the most obvious ones out of the way first. Luke Skywalker and his father are the two characters that most fans agree could have been the Chosen One. While Anakin may have been the one who took action, it was Luke who reached out and found the goodness still trapped within him. Even though Luke is also kind of responsible for the galaxy being in peril again from a big militaristic fascist government (like father like son), there's no reason to really think that Luke isn't still the Chosen One. He can still make up for his failures in training his nephew, Ben Solo (Adam Driver), and contribute to bringing balance to the Force... which raises a good question: what does balance mean? Last I checked, wiping out one-half of a scale doesn't make it even. A huge point of The Last Jedi is that Luke is, well, the last Jedi. If Luke wants the Jedi to end, then maybe true balance means that neither the Sith nor the Jedi should exist.
Rey
Another no-brainer, but for a lot of good reasons. Rey is clearly being groomed to do something huge, indicated by her visions, her bond with the Skywalker lightsaber, and the mystery surrounding her family. She's the main character of the new trilogy, and if anyone is destined to be the Chosen One, it's her. But again, we must consider the idea of balance, something these new Star Wars films have subtly played with. There is some evidence (and plenty of rumors and theories) that Rey will not become a Jedi, but a Gray Jedi, which is a Force-user who BALANCES using both the light and dark sides of the Force. In this way, she will do away with both the Jedi and the Sith, effectively ending their age old conflict without knocking the Force out of whack. The Jedi have always assumed that the Chosen One would follow their rules when really, a true Chosen One wouldn't follow any.
Finn
No one said the Chosen One had to be a Force wielder; it's only someone who will bring balance to the Force. That's pretty vague, and if there's a normal guy in the galaxy who could do it, it's probably Finn. Like Rey, big things are in store for Finn, a character with just as mysterious a past as her's. The exact way Finn would bring balance to the Force is up for debate (never doubt just having a heart-to-heart conversation), but Finn is a character searching for an identity. He's been a stormtrooper (Dark Side) and in The Last Jedi, he's not sure he wants to stay with the Resistance (Light Side). He's trying to find a place where he belongs, and it might be telling that neither of these two symbolic organizations is cutting it for him. Finn's true destiny might be restoring a sense of balance to the universe, and it'd be really sweet if it was just a regular guy who did it.
Kylo Ren
Kylo Ren certainly wouldn't be the first Skywalker to go from good-to-bad-to-good again. The idea of a Kylo Ren redemption has been discussed by fans and while I don't think there is one in the works (no one forgives the guy who murders Han Solo), Ren is a man torn between the two sides of the Force. He feels the pull of the light side but wants to embrace the dark, which makes him one of the most interesting characters ever introduced into Star Wars. It could be that Ren decides to find the best of both worlds and become a Gray Jedi. That doesn't necessarily make him a good guy -- morality might not really need to be a factor in being the Chosen One. Or maybe Ren makes that last minute save and dies just like the grandfather he idolizes so much.
