How Star Wars Fans Can Learn More About The Battleground Planet In The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Crait

One of the new planets that Star Wars: The Last Jedi will visit as the conflict between The Resistance and The First Order escalates is Crait, and as teased back in April, it's going to be the sight of a major battle between the two factions. Director Rian Johnson previously revealed that the Rebels established a base on Crait during the Galactic Civil War, and you can learn about the Rebellion's time on the mineral planet after The Last Jedi is released in an upcoming comic book one-shot.

Written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, with Mike Mayhem tackling the artwork, Star Wars: The Last Jedi -- Storms of Crait #1 will follow Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa as they travel to the salt-covered world to establish a new Rebel base. You can check out the cover artwork below, which was included in the official announcement on StarWars.com.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Storms of Crait #1 cover

Star Wars: The Last Jedi -- Storms of Crait #1 is the latest way the Star Wars franchise has been fleshing out the years between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back since Lucasfilm was brought into the Disney family. One can presume that the Rebels won't stay hidden for long from The Empire on Crait, but this is nonetheless an interesting way to tie one of The Last Jedi's elements to the original Star Wars movies.

So far our only look at Crait has been in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser trailer, where we saw Resistance skimmers racing to meet the First Order Heavy Assault Walkers heading their way in a moment that echoed the Hoth battle from The Empire Strikes Back. Judging by one of the official Last Jedi images, Finn will be participating in the Crait battle, although it's unclear if this takes place before or after his trip to Canto Bight.

In addition to the planet being covered with a thin layer of salt over the ruby-ish base, Crait is also notable for the mines that extract the world's natural minerals. It had also been previously reported before Crait was officially identified that the world contained gems that were used to fund Rebel and Resistance operations, which explains why it will be the stage for a major battle in The Last Jedi. If The First Order is able to destroy The Resistance's Crait base, it would be a major blow to their wallets. That also begs the question of if the Rebellion left behind any treasures when they had to abandon their base to escape the Empire.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi -- Storms of Crait #1 will be available for purchase digitally at at your local comic book store on December 27. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15.
