17 Again, the illegitimate love child of Big and Freaky Friday, was the top hit this weekend banking a mediocre $24 million. While that's a paltry sum compared to the $42 million Efron's High School Musical 3 made last year, it's the highest first weekend ever enjoyed by any movie starring Matthew Perry . But there's still hope for the ex-"Friend"...if he can sing and dance I hear they're already casting for a High School Musical 4.
Despite a cast packed with top list Academy Award winners and nominees, State of Play had to settle for a distant second place. No word yet on how much Universal had to shell out to get the likes of Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn and Ben Affleck on one docket, but it's a likely bet the $14 million the movie banked this weekend isn't a promising start towards a solid profit.
Early contender for 2009's most ridiculous sequel, Crank: High Voltage saw no love at the box office, taking in only $6 million at landing at sixth place, it fell short of the $10 million its predecessor earned for its debut. Apparently Lionsgate Films overestimated America's desire to see Jason Statham clamp a jumper cable to his nipple and yell "clear".
