Piranha 3D Sequel Officially Gets A Green Light

Despite receiving the best reviews of any film released last week, Piranha 3D didn't exactly light the world on fire when it finished sixth in the box office with a $10 million take. The nice thing about having a film cost under $30 million, however, is that it's really easy to make your money back, and that's just what Piranha 3D will do. So what does that mean in Hollywood terms? Sequel time!

Dimension Films has issued a press release saying that Alexandre Aja's film will be getting a sequel, thanks in large part to critical and fan reaction. In the release, producer Mark Canton says, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

Despite efforts by the cast to get the film consideration for Best Picture and its 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Piranha 3D is not a movie that will be brought back into conversation around Oscar season, but its still being called a great time at the theater, something this section of the calendar hasn't exactly be known for. The film is destined for cult status, all one can hope is that the sequel lives up to it.
