Tom Cruise Attached To Remake Of The Magnificent Seven

We've been hearing about a potential Seven Samurai remake for years. Fortunately, though, as time continues to pass it grows less and less likely that it will ever happen. Talk started about the Akira Kurosawa remake back in 2008 and Scott Mann was even hired to direct the project a little over a year ago, but nothing has been said since. We don't know if that project will ever come together, but now there's news that the original remake of that film, The Magnificent Seven, may be getting the remake treatment as well and now may have found its star.

Variety has learned from sources that Tom Cruise is now attached to play the lead in a remake of John Sturges' 1960 western classic. It should be noted that while Cruise has been interested in the idea for a while now, the trade says that the project is"still a long ways off and is not in Cruise's immediate plan." The actor is currently busy shooting Oblivion, a film based on the Arvid Nelson comic book that is being directed by Tron Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski. The original Sturges film starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz as a group of gunfighters who work to defend a small Mexican town from a group of bandits. The remake does not currently have a director and MGM is currently hunting for a writer.

Cruise will next be seen in the musical Rock of Ages and then again in December when One Shot is released.
