Gru Meets His Match In Latest Despicable Me 2 Trailer

In 2010, Illumination Entertainment made their mark with the zany supervillain-centered comedy Despicable Me. This animated adventure centered on the nefarious Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), who went from criminal mastermind to loving adoptive dad, winning the hearts of critics and audiences worldwide. Its stunning success led to a sequel announcement almost immediately following the first's release. Even the popularity of Gru's yellow, gibberish spouting minions spurred a spin-off, coming in 2014.

After years of waiting, Despicable Me 2 is finally coming this summer. The film's first teaser was funny but revealed little about the sequel's plot. But the latest trailer (which you can see above or watch in hi-res at Apple) is far more forthcoming.

It begins with Gru in suburban bliss, caring for his adopted daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agatha, worrying over boys and giving bedtime tuck-ins. Then, it kicks into full-gear when Gru is confronted by Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) of the Anti-Villain League. And after a goofy gadget faceoff, Gru is shuttled off (well, kidnapped) to meet with this curious League. Turns out, they need his help facing down a new supervillain. Gru's back in the game and must save the world!

While this trailer is elusive about this new threat to Gru's homelife, previous casting reports (potential spoilers ahead) tell us that Al Pacino will voice this terrible foe, who was at one point called El Macho. Did the name stick after directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud's first choice Javier Bardem passed? We'll find out when Despicable Me 2 opens July 3rd.
