Beyonce Will Cover Amy Winehouse For The Great Gatsby Soundtrack

At the very least, the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is going to sizzle.

We clarified earlier that artist and mogul Jay-Z would serve as executive producer for Luhrmann’s soundtrack, which also would feature score compositions from Craig Thompson and Anton Monsted. It makes sense, then, that Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce would contribute a track for the soundtrack, which will accompany the film in May.

E! Online reports that Beyonce and Outkast's Andre 3000 will collaborate on a cover of Amy Winehouse’s jaunty, lounge-club single "Back to Black," delivering what a source for Interscope Records calls a “very different take” on the late singer’s song.

The Gatsby soundtrack is shaping up to be a star-studded affair. Early reports claim that Lady Gaga and Prince were contributing tracks for the album. Adding Beyonce and Andre 3000 ups the album’s already substantial street cred. Considering the fact that music has played such a vital role in the initial trailers and recent TV spots for Luhrmann’s delayed work, the driving beats of the movie’s soundtrack might be all we can talk about come May.

Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary masterpiece stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, pairing him with Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton. The movie is scheduled to open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15, though in an odd twist of scheduling, it already will have been open for 5 days in the States. (We get it on May 10.) As a bonus, here’s a live recording of Winehouse singing Back to Black on the BBC from a London concert. You cal tell how the throwback tempos fall in line with Luhrmann’s turn-of-the-century debauchery for Gatsby, so I’ll be curious to see how many changes Beyonce makes to the already popular song.
