The Cornetto Trilogy Golden Mile, Day 3: The Best Fan Art

The films of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost may not be box office hits here in the United States, but there is no questioning the trio’s global cult following. In Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz the three men created two of the best comedies of the last decade, brilliantly mixing laughs with pure love for genre filmmaking, and next week they will deliver The World’s End, the third movie in what has been dubbed The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. In order to show their love for the films, fans have produced a seemingly endless amount of creative material inspired by the series, and today we want to show some of it off.

Today is day three of our 12 day Golden Mile coverage leading up to the release of The World’s End in the U.S., and we’re celebrating by taking a tour through the movie’s official Tumblr and highlighting the best stuff we could find. Sort through the pages to see what we found, and head over HERE to follow the rest of our coverage!

While most of what I have plucked from the official Tumblr is separate artwork made by fans to celebrate The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, let’s first celebrate one of the great gags that ties Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End together… in GIF form. All three movies have a moment where a character tries to do some fence hopping and ends up flat on their face, and those scenes are wonderfully brought together in this series of moving images that a fan has compiled.

”Blood

While “The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy” has emerged as the most popular name grouping the three films made by Wright, Pegg, and Frost, the series has gone by some other names in the past as well. The more Americanized name of the series (because we here in the States don’t have Cornettos) is “The Blood and Ice Cream trilogy” – and this poster seems to be directly inspired by that moniker. The red strawberry topping on the cone has been replaced with what looks like dripping blood, and while it’s odd that the label wrapping around the ice cream has the three titles out of order, it’s still a really cool design.

”Cornetto

My appreciation for this next entry both stems from its cool retro style and the awesome animated versions of the characters played by Pegg and Frost throughout the series. The drawings themselves don’t really look too much like the actors, but it’s all about the details in their wardrobe and facial hair. As a bonus, “Served Wright From The Freezer” is on the level of puns I expect from an ice cream ad. Fantastic stuff.

Creating Cornetto trilogy-inspired artwork to post on the internet is one thing, but making something you wear around every day is a whole other level of fanhood. Enter this Tumblr user who used their artistic skills to design shoes based on Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. Looking closely at the artwork you will see a number of quotes and references to the entire series all put together in a cool pattern. It’s a shame that humans don’t have three feet so that somebody could wear one shoe for each film.

Let’s stick with the theme of hand-drawn stuff, shall we? Illustrated by an artist named Jim Ferguson, these three pieces don’t really have anything tying them together outside of the fact that they are inspired by the same movie franchise, but that doesn’t stop them from being awesome. It’s always great to see fan art that inspires you to think, “I wish I could put that up on my wall.”

”Cornetto

Most of this list has been used to celebrate the heroes of the Three Flavours Cornetto, but this artwork gives even time to both the protagonists and antagonists. Titled "Three Flavours of Doom" and "Three Flavours of Hero," these posters separately show off the characters played by Pegg over the course of the series as well as the zombies, Neighbourhood Watch Alliance members and robots that he has had to go up against. The only thing I’m not sure I get is why the look of the Cornettos themselves change from image to image.

”Cornetto

The internet sure does love minimalist movie posters, and these three designs definitely fit the bill. While it doesn’t maintain the same color scheme as many of the other pieces (The World’s End is usually identified with green to pair up with the Mint Chocolate flavor), but it still does a great job of summing up the three movies by their most identifiable elements. And you have to appreciate the attention to detail – just try and find the words “Fascist” and “Hag” in the Hot Fuzz crossword puzzle.
