Weekend Box Office: Gravity's Pull Is Astronomical For Third Weekend In A Row

There were a lot of famous names floating around the new movies out this weekend. Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Assange, Carrie. But the famous names didn't translate to big box office bucks.

For the third weekend in a row Gravity held on to the number one spot, and held on to it strong, dropping just 30% from last week. It hasn't been shattering any significant box office records, but it has been demonstrating rare staying power and is nearing the $300 million mark in international sales. Captain Phillips held on strong as well, maintaining second place again this week.

The long anticipated Carrie remake finally debuted to the tune of $17 million for a third place opening. While that's not a terrible start for a rated-R horror film, it puts the movie on track to make somewhere in the $30 million range, which isn't much more than that original Carrie banked back in the 1970's.

2013 isn't turning out to be the year of the aging action start. Escape Plan had a sleepy opening with less than $10 million for a quiet fifth place spot. It marks the second disappointing debut this year for Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Stallone's Bullet to the Brain tanked back in February and Schwarzenegger's The Last Stand bombed in January).

There was little to no interest in the Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate. It settled in at eighth place with less than $2 million. With less than $4 million in sales internationally, against a $28 million budget, Fifth Estate is a bigger disaster than his extradition fiasco.

12 Years A Slave made a big splash in small release, banking almost $1 million despite showing on less than 20 screens. That's a solid start for a film getting a lot of buzz and being poised to open wide to both financial and critical acclaim.
